1) What is the Non-Lucrative Visa?:
The Non-Lucrative Visa is a residence permit that allows non-EU/EEA nationals to live in Spain for more than 90 days. The “non-lucrative” part is key: you are not permitted to work for a Spanish company or carry out professional activities within Spain. While it is perfect for retirees, it is also an excellent option for those taking a sabbatical or individuals living off passive income (like rentals, dividends, or pensions).

- A Path to Permanent Residency: After 5 years of living in Spain on an NLV, you can apply for permanent residency.
- Travel Freedom: You can travel freely throughout the Schengen Area (up to 90 days every 180 days).

3) 2026 Financial requirements:
To qualify, you must prove you have “sufficient means” to live in Spain. This is calculated using the IPREM (Spain’s Public Income Indicator). For 2026, the requirements remain stable:

The journey to Spain usually takes between 3 to 5 months from start to finish.

5) Important considerations for 2026:
- Remote Work: If you intend to work remotely for a company outside of Spain, the authorities now prefer that you apply for the Digital Nomad Visa instead of the NLV. The NLV is strictly for those who are not working.
- The 183-Day Rule: To renew your NLV (which follows a 1+2+2 year pattern), you must generally reside in Spain for at least 183 days per year. This also makes you a tax resident in Spain, meaning you will be taxed on your worldwide income.
Flexibility: As of 2026, many consulates have become more flexible with the “entry window,” sometimes giving applicants up to a full year to make their move once the visa is granted.
